Mission/Philosophy

The overall mission of ACAP is to teach, expand, and apply psychoanalytic knowledge of human motivation and behavior. ACAP accomplishes this mission through a psychoanalytic training program; the North Jersey Consultation Center (NJCC), a psychoanalytic treatment service; and an applied psychoanalytic division.

The mission of the Psychoanalytic Training Program is to provide training in modern psychoanalytic theory and technique that addresses the full range of emotional disorders and encourages the development of theoretical and clinical innovation; to graduate students who are competent clinicians capable of fulfilling ACAP’s overall mission while functioning successfully as independent professionals; and to prepare ACAP students to engage in psychoanalytic research and to support the goal of publishing research results in recognized psychoanalytic journals.

The mission of the Psychoanalytic Treatment Service (NJCC) is to provide a psychoanalytic treatment service to the community for the full range of emotional problems at moderate fees based on the patient’s ability to pay; and to provide a facility in which students can engage in supervised clinical practice as part of their training.

The mission of the Applied Psychoanalytic Division, through extension courses and workshops is to apply modern psychoanalytic understanding to diverse systems in our society and thereby enable associations, agencies, groups and individuals to function in more productive ways. Target audiences include groups such as schools, corporations, government agencies, law enforcement agencies, and medical practitioners, as well as individuals and families. Continuing education and professional development credits are available.
