Dr. Goldberg will discuss the relevance of her recently published memoir, My Mother, My Daughter, My Self, to the maturation of the young child moving from the original symbiosis to eventual separation. Crucial to this on-going (life-long) developmental process is the child coming to own his or her own self. And this is done primarily through “knowing ‘no.’ “‘No’ is the most important word the child will learn, because it is the demarcation point of an emerging, individuated self.
